In the early 1900 Winchcombe had numerous local football teams; Winchcombe Wesley, St Peters (Church team), Wednesday (shop keepers) and Winchcombe United.

Winchcombe Town Football Club was formed in 1906 comprising mainly of local lads, entering the Cheltenham Football League in 1907. They played football at various locations around the town, including Barnmeadow Road and Corndean Lane, before finally residing at their current home - King George V playing field at Mill Lane.

When the team first formed, Winchcombe Town played in black and white. Though throughout the clubs history they have been known to wear other colours, such as red and blue during the 1970’s. The club reverted back to black and white stripes in the late 1980's as its home jersey, with yellow as the away jersey.

The club has had many successful periods during its long history, with the late 1960’s and early 1970’s both sides gaining promotions. The 1st team went from playing in Cheltenham Division 3 to Division 1 and the Reserve team went from Division 5 to Division 2. The pinnacle of this successful period was the club becoming Cheltenham Football League Division One Champions in 1971 for the first time in the its history.

Fast forward and at the turn of the Century, both teams were in terrific form with the Reserve team gaining consecutive promotions from Division 5 to 1 from 2004/05 to 2008/09, coming runners-up in Division 4 and winning Division 3 along the way.

The 1st team were twice runners-up in Division 1 in 2005/06 and 2006/07 before winning the League in 2007/08 and gaining promotion to the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League. The team also welcomed cup success during this time by winning a cup double in 2005/06 in the form of the Arthur Shipway Cup and Senior Charities Cup, a competition they had twice finished runners-up in 2002/03 and 2004/05.

It’s over one hundred years since Winchcombe Town Football Club was formed, and in recent years the teams have all played in different locations across Winchcombe. This is something the club hopes will change in the future by having a ground that all our teams can share whilst playing in their respective leagues, and finally all call home.
